Fight for Air Climb Goes Virtual Today

No burning glutes or quads today. No happy, whirring, group of 1,500 people gathering, walking, and climbing through four buildings in Downtown Des Moines. No, COVID-19 has put a stop to the Fight for Air Climb – Des Moines gathering in person. Coincidentally, COVID-19 is a lung disease, so the urgency is greater than ever.

Des Moines Radio Group, lead by 93.3 KIOA, has proudly sponsored the American Lung Association in Iowa’s Fight for Air Climb for 15-years. This year, instead of me spinning tunes and welcoming climbers back from meeting both their physical and fundraising goals during the climb, we have had to go virtual.

Courtest ALA

To that end, I wanted everyone to know that you can still give to help in the fight against all kinds of lung disease – including COVID-19. Here’s an article about how one of the ALA’s researchers has found a protein to help constrain the virus. Research is just one area your dollars help make possible. The majority of dollars raised stay right here in Iowa.

Here is the general website, you can still set up a page to be a fundraiser – entry fee $25, then raise at least $100. Or, you can give via my link: Kate Garner.

Here’s the quick story of lung disease in my life:

“I was supposed to be volunteering at the Fight for Air Climb in Des Moines today. Alas, due to COVID-19 – which ends up in your lungs – we can not. So, here is my story. Please, give if you can.
My Story: I have asthma. My grandfather died of pneumonia. My uncle has COPD. My youngest brother served in Iraq. My Dad is a Vietnam Vet, and was a trucker. My Great-Grandfather had black lung from the mines. All of my parents are former smokers. And, my other brother is a nurse.
My family has been deeply affected by lung disease for generations. That’s why I am fundraising.”

So, please, give if you can.

Best,
Kate Garner, News Director, Des Moines Radio Group
